Inside Mizan Academy: The Systems Behind Every Class
When you enrol your child with Mizan Academy, you are not booking a tutor. You are joining an institution. This post explains what that means in practice — the systems we have built so that every family, in every country, gets the same disciplined, accountable Quran and Islamic education.
Mizan Academy began in January 2020 in Kabul with a simple promise: structured, trustworthy Quranic and Islamic education for Afghan families living far from home. Today we teach 600+ active students across 18+ countries, with 37 qualified teachers delivering more than 4,000 live classes every month.
Growth like that only works if the systems behind it are strong. A single teacher can be excellent. An institution has to be consistently excellent — for the child in Manchester and the child in Melbourne, for the family that has been with us since 2020 and the family that joined last week.
Over the past year we have rebuilt the technology that runs Mizan Academy from the ground up. Here is what we have built, and why it matters for your family.
1. Live classes on Microsoft Teams — with an account for every student
Every Mizan student receives their own Microsoft Teams account, created and managed by the academy. Classes are live, face-to-face sessions with a real teacher — not pre-recorded videos.
Because the account belongs to the academy, three things follow:
Every class is recorded and stays inside the student's Teams account, so lessons can be revisited at home.
Nothing depends on a teacher's personal phone or WhatsApp. The classroom, the schedule and the books all live inside one institutional system.
If a teacher changes, nothing is lost. The student's account, history and books stay exactly where they are.
Students join with one tap. Parents never need to hunt for a link.
2. Attendance you can trust — marked every session, reviewed by our team
Attendance is the single strongest predictor of progress in Quran learning. A child who attends 90% of sessions memorises, recites and retains at a completely different level from one who attends half. So we built attendance to be the most reliable record in the academy.
Every session, the teacher marks each child as Present, Late or Absent — with the Quran portion covered, an engagement rating and, where a child is absent, how many times the teacher tried to reach the family and why the child was away (unwell, travelling, technical problem, no answer).
Our admin team reviews the record before it is final. Attendance is not simply a teacher's word; it is checked against our own class data and approved by management.
Families are notified the same day. If your child misses a class, you receive a message by email and WhatsApp, in your language — Pashto, Dari or English — so a pattern of absence can never build up quietly. If a child misses several classes in a row, our team reaches out directly.
The teacher portal itself is bilingual (Pashto with English), so our teachers in Kabul and Peshawar work in their own language while the record you receive is in yours.
3. Planned leave and holidays — tell us once, and the record is protected
Families travel. Children get ill. Eid comes. In the past, a planned holiday could turn into a string of "absent" marks and a string of reminder messages that nobody wanted.
Now there is a proper leave system. When you tell our admin team that your child will be away — a week for a family trip, a fortnight for Eid — we record it as approved leave:
No absence is recorded for those days.
No absence messages are sent.
Your child's attendance percentage, streaks and certificate eligibility are fully protected.
Your child's teacher and time slot are held for your return.
One important rule: leave is registered with the admin team, not with the teacher. A teacher cannot approve leave. This keeps the record accurate and means your child's attendance history is never at the mercy of a message that got lost in a chat.
4. The Family Portal — your child's education, in one place
Parents told us the same thing again and again: "I want to see what is happening without having to ask."
The Mizan Family Portal answers that. It lives inside Microsoft Teams (one tap from the class itself) and on the web, and it shows you, for each child:
Attendance — every session, with date, class and status, and how many sessions were attended out of those held.
Schedule — the weekly timetable in your own time zone.
Library — the same teaching books your child uses in class.
Progress — the recognitions and milestones your child has earned.
The portal is read-only and private by design. Each family sees only their own children — no one else's — and this has been independently reviewed to make sure it stays that way. Login uses the Teams account we created for your child, so there is no new password to invent.
We are switching the portal on family by family, in small groups, so that every household gets a personal welcome and a working login rather than a broadcast. If yours has not arrived yet, it is on the way.

Every Mizan class uses the same books, and every book is now inside the platform:
Quran Karim — a tajweed-coloured mushaf in the 16-line IndoPak script our students know, where the green, red and blue letters teach pronunciation rules on the page.
Qaida Noorani — for beginners building their letters and sounds.
Aqeedah, Fiqh, Seerah, Akhlaq and Tajweed — the enrichment subjects taught at the end of every session.
The library was rebuilt so that it opens in seconds even on a slow connection. The first page of the Quran now appears after loading a fraction of the file, and the next pages load quietly in the background as the teacher turns them. During a live class the teacher can highlight, underline and point with a laser marker directly on the page while your child follows on the same book.
We made one rule non-negotiable when we built this: quality is never reduced. Our books are never compressed, re-encoded or altered. Every colour, diacritic and letterform reaches your child exactly as the publisher printed it — because in a tajweed mushaf, the colour is the lesson.
6. Homework that actually happens: review the recording
Reading the Quran well is a skill built by repetition. A single live session a day is not enough on its own — the reinforcement happens between classes.
That is why homework at Mizan is now mandatory and simple: after every class, the student opens the recording of that lesson in Microsoft Teams and repeats what they learned, in their own time, at their own pace. No printouts, no separate app. The teacher who taught the lesson is the teacher on the recording.
We have produced a short tutorial video showing students exactly how to do this, and teachers record at each session whether homework was set. Homework completion is being added to the student's record alongside attendance, so that effort at home becomes part of the picture we — and you — can see.
7. A dedicated evaluation team watching every child's progress
Behind every teacher is a second layer: Mizan's evaluation team. They monitor class delivery, review recordings and track each student's engagement and conduct over time.
At every session the teacher records an engagement and conduct rating. Combined with attendance, this builds a picture that allows our team to spot early — often before a parent notices — when a child is drifting, struggling, or ready for more. When something needs attention, our admin team contacts you, not the teacher.
This is also how we hold ourselves accountable. Teachers are monitored for punctuality, delivered class time and consistency, and their performance is reviewed by management. A great teacher at Mizan is sincere, punctual, patient and open to feedback — and our systems are designed to recognise exactly that.
8. Certificates and recognition — earned, and verifiable
Children work hard, and recognition matters. Mizan awards certificates at two levels.
Monthly recognition awards are generated automatically from the attendance record:
Perfect Attendance — every scheduled session attended in the month.
Milestones — for example, 20 classes in a row without a single absence.
Formal certificates mark the major achievements of a Quran education:
Qaida Graduation — completing Qaida Noorani and moving to the Quran.
Quran Graduation — completing the recitation of the Quran.
Certificate of Appreciation — for outstanding dedication and conduct.
Every formal certificate carries the student's name, the programme completed, the academy's seal and two signatures from academy leadership. It is printed in English with a personal recognition line in your family's language — Pashto or Dari — and a QR code that anyone can scan to confirm it at mizanacademy.org/verify. A Mizan certificate cannot be forged, and it is only ever issued to a registered Mizan student.
Our long-term aim, already in motion, is to deliver printed certificates and curriculum materials physically to families' homes.
9. Simple, transparent fees — and payments that look after themselves
Our pricing is public and there is nothing hidden.
1:1 classes from $30 a month, with 2, 3 or 5 sessions a week.
Family plans from $50 a month for two children, with growing discounts for larger families.

Card payments renew automatically each month, and we bill in USD, GBP, EUR or CAD depending on where you live. Our system watches for cards that are about to expire and tells you before a payment fails — not after. Families who prefer to pay by bank transfer or hawala receive friendly reminders, in their language, on a fixed schedule, so nobody is ever surprised.
10. Your first week — we ask, and we listen
Seven days after a new family's first class, we send a short feedback form — by email and WhatsApp, in Pashto, Dari or English, with a language switch at the top so you can answer in whichever you prefer.
It takes about a minute: how happy you are overall, how your child is finding the teacher, whether the schedule works, and whether joining on Teams has been smooth.
Every response is read. Any concern — about a teacher, a time slot or a technical problem — is assigned to a named member of our team and followed up. A new family should never drift away quietly because nobody asked.
11. One official channel for everything
This is the rule that protects your family most, so we state it plainly.
Your teacher's job is teaching. Schedules, fees, leave, account changes, complaints and every other administrative matter are handled by the Mizan admin team through our official channels only:

Teachers are not authorised to change schedules, discuss fees, or arrange anything privately. If you are ever contacted outside these channels about your child's account, please let us know.
Why is this so important? Because it means the academy — not any single individual — is accountable to you. Your child's records, books, recordings and progress belong to your family and are held by the institution. That is the difference between a school and a marketplace.
12. Built for three languages, from the ground up
Most of our families speak Pashto or Dari at home. So every message the academy sends — attendance alerts, fee reminders, feedback forms, certificate recognitions — is available in Pashto, Dari and English, with full right-to-left layout where it belongs. Our teacher portal runs in Pashto and English. Translations are written by Afghan speakers, not machines.
13. Security and reliability, quietly
A few things you should never have to think about, so we do:
Each parent sees only their own children — verified route by route.
Logins are protected against automated attacks, and public forms are protected against spam.
Every message we send is logged, so if something fails we know, and we fix it.
The academy's data is backed up daily, with a tested recovery plan.
What's next
We are not finished. Currently in progress:
Referral programme — a $10 credit on your own fees each time a family you refer completes their first month, delivered by WhatsApp or email so you do not need the portal to take part.
Homework completion tracking — recorded at every session and reflected in your child's record.
Portal rollout to every family, in small welcomed groups.
A higher-resolution Quran edition for even sharper reading when zoomed in.
Physical delivery of certificates and books.
The point of all this
None of these systems teach a child to recite the Quran. Our teachers do that, with sincerity and patience, one session at a time.
What the systems do is make sure the promise holds for every child: that attendance is real, that progress is watched, that achievements are recognised, that families are informed, and that the academy — not chance — is responsible for the outcome.
